The best grilled cheese sandwich recipe is oozing with melted cheese. So simple, so delicious and very morish. There’s nothing more satisfying and comforting than a gooey, melty grilled cheese! All you need is bread, butter and cheese. And not one type of cheese, but three. The ultimate in flavour and stretch.
Best cheeses for Grilled Cheese Sandwich
There are lots of different types of cheeses that can be used. Cheeses with a high melting point are best, such as Mozzarella, Monterey Jack, Fontina, Havarti, Gouda, Brie, Gruyere, Swiss, Provolone, Colby just to name a few. My personal favourite is Gouda, Havarti and Smoked Cheese together. I love the smokiness, gives a nice taste.
As for the cheese, pre-sliced or grate you own is fine. Don't buy pre-grated cheese as this contains anti-caking agents like cellulose (wood pulp) and preservatives to prevent clumping.
What is the secret to a good Grilled Cheese Sandwich
To make the best grilled cheese sandwich there are few golden rules to follow.
- Use salted butter (extra flavour) cooked in a frying pan on both sides until the cheese is ooey gooey. The bread becomes golden and crispy on the outside. When you bite into your sandwich, you should hear a crunch, and the cheese will ooze.
- Skip the sandwich press—it just flattens the sandwich and makes the cheese ooze out onto the press. I like my cheese to stay in the sandwich. Using a frying pan gives the best results without squashing it, and you’ll get a crispy golden crust with that perfect first bite.
- Use a thick style of sliced bread. The best bread is thick toasting bread or crusty country style bread like sourdough.
